How commission rate changes affect existing referrals

Rates are evaluated at the moment each commission is generated, not at the time the referral was made. What that means in practice.

Affonso evaluates the commission rate at the moment each commission is generated (i.e. at each payment event), not at the time the referral was first made. There is no per-referral rate locking.

What that means in practice

  • Editing a group's incentive from 40% to 30% — every future commission for every affiliate in that group is generated at 30%, including renewals for customers referred while the rate was 40%.
  • Moving an affiliate from one group to another — all future commissions for that affiliate use the new group's rate, including renewals for previously-referred customers.
  • Commissions already generated keep the rate they were generated with. The hold period does not re-evaluate the rate.

Grandfathering old cohorts

Today, the workaround is cohort-based groups: keep one group per cohort and don't edit it.

  • Group A: Early Bird affiliates, 40%, do not edit.
  • Group B: Default, 30%, for new affiliates.

Per-referral rate locking is on the roadmap.

Where to configure rates
